At Meynell Primary School, we recognise that the personal development of pupils—spiritually, morally, socially and culturally—plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve.
We aim to:
- Provide a balanced, engaging and broad education that gives our children opportunities to explore and develop their own values, beliefs and spiritual awareness.
- Encourage a positive and caring attitude towards other people, promote an understanding of British Values and social and cultural traditions, and develop an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development is promoted not only through all curriculum subjects, but also through the ethos of the school and our shared values.
SMSC in Everyday School Life
Beyond Jigsaw, pupils experience SMSC in action through leadership roles and whole‑school experiences, some of these include:
- Student Council
- Job Squad
- Playground Ambassadors
- Dining Hall Helpers
- Election Day
- Recycle Week
- Black History Month
- Cultural celebrations and themed weeks
Please see below for the full SMSC Calendar.
SMSC Through Jigsaw (PSHE)
Jigsaw is a key strand of SMSC at Meynell. It nurtures the whole child through emotional literacy, mindfulness and personal development. Every lesson from Early Years to Year 6 includes mapped opportunities for children to grow spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, while developing key emotional skills such as:
- Empathy
- Self‑awareness
- Motivation
- Social understanding
- Managing feelings
Jigsaw also provides meaningful opportunities to explore and reinforce the British Values of:
democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.
